The other officer was taken to hospital for facial injuries and has since been released.

An investigation is under way under Strike Force Rabnor.

Premier Chris Minns said he was “devastated” to hear about the assault, and that his thoughts were with the “brave” officers.

“These men saw an incident, went to assist those involved and were brutally attacked. This is sickening,” Minns said.

“Every day our police force put their lives on the line to keep us safe – even when they’re not in uniform.

“All of NSW will be thinking of these brave men and their families.”

Police are appealing to members of the public to identify the three men.

The first is described as being of Maori or Pacific Islander appearance, around 20–30 years old, with short, curly black hair, wearing a white T-shirt and dark blue jeans.

The second man is of Caucasian appearance, 20–30 years old, wearing a tan colour vest, tan colour cargo pants and black sneakers.

The third is of Maori or Pacific Islander appearance, 20–30 years old, with long brown curly hair, long sleeve black strip flannelette shirt, grey track pants and black slides.
