THAT ramp shot attempt
For a moment there, Sam Konstas must have forgotten he was playing the real Boxing Day Test instead of Boxing Day at mum’s. Or maybe, that’s the way Test cricket is played in 2024. To his 11th ball of his innings, and career, Konstas attempted a reverse scoop over the wicketkeeper’s head to Jasprit Bumrah. Thankfully for Konstas, the ball did not rattle his stumps. Otherwise it would have been a most embarrassing way to depart the MCG on Test debut. It was a play more in keeping with Big Bash and Bazball than traditional Test cricket. The shot was met with wry smile from his opening partner Usman Khawaja, who is twice his age, and bemusement from Bumrah. The stadium is now abuzz.

Goodness me, Sam Konstas attempted a ramp shot against Bumrah. The batter missed it and ball missed the stumps .… third over of a Test at the MCG. Remarkable.

Analysis: What a start
That might be the best six balls anyone’s had to face in their first over in Test cricket. Half of those were borderline unplayable from Bumrah to Konstas. Great contest brewing. The teenager would love to get down the other end. Massive crowd already in.

Wow, what an opening over
Goodness me, that was great to watch. One of the world’s best bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah, had the opening over and a Test debutant, Sam Konstas, at the other end.
The star Indian quick beat the bat multiple times. Konstas looked far from unnerved but Bumrah wanted to test him out straight away.
