It could go down as the session that decided the series. Sure, Australia had the better of Boxing Day, reaching 6-311 at stumps, but the morning on day two at the MCG completely changed the complexion of the match. Steve Smith and Pat Cummins scored freely as India stuck with a largely all-pace attack for most of the time. The duo brought up a century stand and, at the first break, of the day, Australia had reached 7-454 … that’s 143 runs for the session for the loss of only one wicket when Cummins was caught in the covers.

Starc joined Smith in the middle, and was content to play second fiddle. Who wouldn’t? India will be doing some soul-searching during their meal break.

Australia 7-454. 113 overs. Smith 139*, Starc 15*
