Mother identified as driver killed when metal tool crashed into windscreen
“It’s really sad that we have a 46-year-old Deer Park woman — a mother, a wife —who has sadly died as a result of this.”
Grech’s family, who The Age contacted on Friday, were trying to grieve while helping police as best they could, McEvoy said.
The 46-year-old’s death was met with an outpouring of support from hundreds of mourners on social media on Friday.
Grech is Maltese, and moved to Australia 30 years ago, the Times of Malta reported. She last visited her home country in October.
Grech married husband Daniel Cutajar in January this year.
The piece of metal that hit Grech’s car was chrome, about one metre long and 30 centimetres wide, McEvoy said.
“I’m hoping that somebody can now check the back of their ute, the back of the truck, or their vehicle in which they were carrying it, and search for it,” he said.
It was incredibly important that drivers properly secured their loads on their vehicles, he said.
