Police said he was struck by the car at about 10am, and died at the scene.

There are multiple schools, a childcare centre and a Melbourne Polytechnic campus near the crash site, which were all closed for the weekend.

Police allege the driver, a 27-year-old Glenroy man, continued driving along the footpath before hitting a power pole.

He was freed from the wrecked car by firefighters, before being taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition with a lower body injury.

The pedestrian was walking along Dalton Road at around 9.30am.

The driver was later arrested and is currently in hospital under police guard. He is yet to be spoken to by police.

Daryll Out, detective sergeant with the Major Collision Unit, said that a number of witnesses saw the car driving erratically before the incident.
